Every day, people working in the agricultural sector need to identify plant pests in order to make decisions about how to manage those pests. Many pests are difficult to identify and those who find them are often a long way from the experts who can help. The longer it takes to identify a pest, the more damage it is likely to cause. In the case of exotic and regulated plant pests, delays in identification can affect our ability to eradicate or contain the pest.
Pestpoint harnesses the power of social media for pest identification. It provides a secure web-space where online communities can create private networks in which members collaborate to identify damaging plant pests. By using mobile devices to collect field information and share pest images, you can instantly draw on the collective knowledge of your networks to identify pests. Pestpoint will document the process along with the location, time, host plant and collector information and store it in a searchable database. In addition to diagnostic images, Pestpoint can quickly record the presence of multiple pests on hosts of interest from tailored target lists.
Pestpoint consists of two pieces of software, a web browser version for connecting people so that they can diagnose a pest problem (www.pestpoint.org.au) and an iPad app for collecting field information about pests on the fly.
Members can only see information in networks to which they have been granted access by an administrator. Within a network, supervisors can monitor all enquiries while members and specialist diagnosticians can only see enquiries that they have created or have been invited to advise on.
Pestpoint provides the flexibility to manage the privacy of your data in your networks the way you want.
